Have you ever read a story that just sticks with you, like, for years? Every now and then something sparks the memory of it. You wish you could read it again, if only you could remember the author, or the title, or the name of the magazine you read it in.
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago … I read a story in a magazine. (I’m sure you saw that coming.) I have no idea what magazine it was, nor the title or author. What follows contains SPOILERS. You have been warned.
This story was about a man watching a fish swimming in a pond, and wishing he could be the fish. The story goes on to tell how the man’s family (?) find him on the ground, unable to walk or speak, and he was hospitalized. Therein, he learns to walk and speak again. After some time, the man is back at the pond and he sees the fish, and that’s when the reader discovers that the man and the fish had switched places, and everything the man had gone through was actually the fish learning to function as a human. It was a lovely story about being careful of what you wish for.
Long story short (pun intended): does the story sound familiar to anyone? I’d really like to find it again, to reread it. My own attempts at fishing the internet for this story have netted me nothing. I now seek a more experienced internet fisher to catch this elusive fish.
Okay. I’m done with the horrible attempts at humor. 😛
